THE ATLANTIC

When my Dad first talked of sailing the Atlantic I thought it was absurd and frankly could not imagine anything worse! However, as I thought about it more and learned about what was involved I realised this was a rare opportunity and it could be quite exciting.

Although we will be sailing independently we are doing the crossing with an organisation called the ARC who provide advise and safety checks. We will be leaving the Canary Islands on the 6th of November for about an 800 mile crossing to the Cape Verde Islands which I hope will take 6 days. We will then be leaving the Cape Verde Islands on the 15th of November for a 2200 mile crossing and hope to be arriving in Saint Lucia on the 2nd of December. The longest I have been out at sea without touching land was 4 days, when I crossed the North Sea which was around 500 miles so clearly this will be a big challenge for me. Living on board a boat is quite cramped and people get on each others nerves so I feel this will be one of the most difficult things to deal with. I also worry that I will get bored as if there is no wind we cannot put the motor on- as I am used to! However, often boats experience following seas which are really exciting and you can feel like you are flying.

I am going on a number of courses to prepare myself for this adventure which you can read more about in the blog section. I will be writing in the blog section about my experiences and travels throughout the year. There are also some links to our AIS and another tracker so you can see our progress from Lisbon to Saint Lucia.

I am using this challenge to raise money to enable me to go to Nepal after Christmas to teach English in a school supported by the AV Foundation. I would be very grateful if you could sponsor me and help me reach my fundraising target of £3300.
